My teaching philosophy relies on the premise that teachers and students are both equally engaged in the process of learning. This involves teachers facilitating learning which will empower students to actively seek opportunities to explore, discover and challenge things that exist in the world around them.

I have come to understand that the learning for this age group of students is unique and needs to be treated so when constructing learning programmes for the emerging adolescent. Teachers need to acknowledge:

Varied forms of learning
Active learners fosters initiative as opposed to passive learners
Teacher acknowledges learners abilities and where they are at in their learning
Collegial rapport and teacher humour
Integrated programme where learning from different subjects could be combined.
The survival of middle schooling movement depends on quality of the curriculum delivery
Shows matching programmes to pupils not pupils to programmes. This is reflected in the organisational structures
Attend to the educational and social perspectives of education.

I am very appreciative to have the opportunity to teach your young people and I understand the responsibility that is bestowed upon one to provide a quality education for your young people

As part of our ‘Big Picture’ idea for Term Four I would like our Senior School to undertake a study of leadership within our school , wider community and nationally. The Elections will be an excellent catalyst for us to look at leadership structures nationally and then within our own school. The News Paper in Education programme is a multi-media education package dedicated to helping educate and develop informed, socially-aware youth across New Zealand. NiE promotes student literacy and analysis of the news and media, while encouraging effective use of newspapers in the classroom.

I would like each child to purchase a NIE Election paper/activities for a price of $1.00. Please hand money to your classroom teacher.

Using the Seven Hats Model decide on which hat you will use to design your higher order thinking questions that will drive your inquiry.

Create at least three inquiry questions

This will help you decide on what stance will take on this issue. i.e. agree or disagree.

Step 4: Locate information

Think about various resources that will use to support your inquiry questions. Don’t restrict your information to just the internet.

Step 5: Collect and Organise

Skim and Scan through information to find key words that answer your key questions.

Take notes of these key points by re writing these into your own words.

Step 6: Organise and Process

Organise your keynotes into paragraphs into language you understand and know. Don’t cut and paste information that is not your own words.

Step 7: Present your information

Present your report to the class using powerpoint. Use other applications like moviemaker, utube, windows media to enhance your presentation.

Wildlife experts are preparing for the impact of the latest oil slick from the stricken container ship Rena.

Maritime New Zealand On-Scene Commander Rob Service said planning teams were continuing to track the movement of between 5 and 10 tonnes that leaked from the ship overnight Saturday.

“The slick remains around the vessel for now, but our current modelling suggests it will move slowly north from Wednesday and possibly reach the shoreline of Tuhua/Mayor Island on Thursday,” he said this morning.

Mayor Island is a wildlife refuge, home to many native birds, and has a five-square-kilometre marine reserve off its northern coast.

“We have sent a team of wildlife experts to the island to assess what we can do to protect wildlife if we get some shoreline impact there in the next few days,” he said.

“The team is working with iwi, who own and care for the island, as local expertise and knowledge is hugely valuable.”

Service said the leak on Saturday was the most significant since a major spill on October 11.

He hoped most of the oil could be contained with booms and removed from the water, but said the conditions were “very dynamic” and the oil’s trajectory could still change.

“We will continue to track the slick with observation flights and on-water surveillance as well. It is spread very thinly and this will help break up the oil over the next day or so.”

Meanwhile the operation to pump fuel from the Rena continued overnight.

Camp 2011

From the 9th – 12th August 2011, Rooms 1 and 2 stayed at the Waiouru Army Marae. This was our base for this years camp. We took part in a range of activities including learning about our Army, Navy and Airforce history, using RATPACKS, riding on an Army M548 Amphibious Personal Carrier and swimming. We also went to Mount Ruapehu where we snowboarded and skied at Happy Valley on the Whakapapa ski field. It was a full on camp. We would like to thank all the parents who helped us on camp and also to those who organised and took part in our camp fundraisers which helped us to get there.

Room 1 Mini Projects

In Term 1 Room 1 took part in creating mini projects about the Japanese Earthquake. The students worked in groups of two and had to follow a simple research process to succesfully complete the projects. There were two Key Questions – What caused the Disaster? How did it affect Japan?

In Term 1 for writing we have been focusing on instructional text. As part of our learning we combined instructional writing and numeracy by making maths games for different levels and using detailed instructions to help the player play the game correctly. Here are some of the games that were made. Awesome work guys!
